Beginner’s Guide to Abacus

Most of us are unaware about the exact meaning or usage about the term Abacus. We often wonder or seek answers to questions like why abacus is important or the science behind abacus? Well, in simple words, Abacus is a brain enhancement tool or device, which is used to solve simple mathematical problems. This device has been used by our ancestors for several centuries to solve complex sums in a quick & easy way.
Abacus is mostly used for arithmetic problems related to addition, multiplication, subtraction, division and for counting decimal places. The Abacus programme is divided into different levels and continuous practice sessions are required to attain speed and accuracy. It is different from our modern calculation tools as it uses simple beads for counting numbers. It consists of-
• Rectangular frame
• Upper Beads/Deck or Heaven Beads
• Lower Beads/ Deck or Earth Beads
• Beam
• Rod
While teaching Abacus, we are stimulating right side of the child’s brain. Human brain uses the right side of the brain for imagination, visualization, intuition, whereas left side is used for logical processing or linear processes. The traditional form of teaching arithmetic, trains left side of the brain and therefore students have to rely on memorization. Abacus minimizes strain on child’s short term memory, and make child understands the numbers in concrete way.
Only practice can make a child perfect in Abacus. Step up school have introduced Abacus in its core curriculum from this academic session, from Grade 1 onwards, to enable students to excel in the complex world of mathematics. Regular classes are conducted during school time, with the goal to succeed in different level of Mathematics.
Abacus not only helps in proper understanding of math curriculum, but also possesses other vital benefits-
• Sharpens Listening skills & concentration
• Boosts memory power and observance
• Enhances logical reasoning
• Make math fun
• Develops creativity and positive attitude in children
• Self discipline
• Enhances Ability to multi task
Abacus is a very useful tool for kids and makes understanding of Mathematics easy, accurate and fast. We must enroll our kids for this programme at the early age of 5+ as this is the duration when right brain development happens. The colourful beads make learning interesting and exciting. The concepts are reinforced through child’s sense of touch and feel. It stimulates our analytical and reasoning abilities.
