We at Step up School (near NH 24) understand that for children, play is as natural as breathing. It is a means by which little wonders establish physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and moral capabilities. As children play, they learn to get along with others, and acquire the fine and gross motor skills needed to grow and learn. It not only strengthens many areas of learning & development, but also helps in cultivating young brains for self regulation abilities & creativity.
Play is the work of children. It is a nonstop way of making them engaged and interacts with the world at a very early age. Play is not only a means of creating and preserving friendships, but is often considered as a relief from serious learning. But have we ever thought, do our children get enough time to hit the playground? Are they able to indulge in this act freely? Is playing a respite from study or should be considered as a unique way of learning?
Development of Skills & Knowledge
The process of learning at Step Up is such that students develop cognitive skills like problem solving, decision making & memorializing. During play they get to see things from other person’s point of view and negotiate when their ideas combat. Elementary reading, vocabulary, and writing skills are developed as they recite usual stories/rhymes to stuff toys or create a menu in their toy kitchen set. Exploring measurement and problem solving skills are learnt by our little shoppers in mock grocery stores, where they pretend to count or build in the block area. We always encourage children in establishing observation skills, understanding natural processes, making predictions, and testing their ideas to find the solution.
Role of Teachers
Professionally qualified teachers & mentors of our school support each child’s learning and gather necessary information by observing them. This process helps in planning additional activities and opportunities for students of distinct caliber. Likewise, children are encouraged by asking questions about their ideas, and in turn given specific feedbacks. Not only accomplishments but persistence and efforts are also celebrated in the class. Challenging tasks and problems are designed in such a manner that it drives the child a bit beyond what he/she can already do. Teacher-directed activities and transitions are amalgamated with exploration, creativity, and socialization.
Offering Time, Space & Material
Our classroom surroundings are devised to involve minds of young stepians, meet their sensory requirements, and offer practicable training with academic content. With thoughtfully devised activity centers, children flow from one activity to the next with a sense of purpose. Our classroom includes dramatic play corner, sensory table, block center, math center etc. Materials in each center can also be integrated into more than one center. Creativity and invention build from some of the most elementary materials, and having access to these materials can make a remarkable distinction in each child’s capacity to grasp. We must remember that minds & bodies are most engrossed and focused when they are offered time, space, and relevant materials that make logic of what they are learning.
